Taking the Lead

Autumn Bracken walked briskly into the girls' change room. Her heart was pounding. She leaned against a sink and tried not to throw up. Did I just read what I think I did? she asked her reflection in the mirror.
She had been waiting for this moment all year. Now, auditions were over and rehearsals were about to begin. Autumn was crushed. She hadn't seen this coming, but there was no denying what was on the cast list. She didn't get the lead in the musical.
Autumn took a deep breath and tried to calm down. Get a hold of yourself, woman! she thought. It's just a show. And Hing has a great voice, too. Not to mention that she is a year older. She deserves the part as much as you do. Now snap out of it.
It would be all right. It would be a great show, and she still had a good part. She even got to be the understudy if Hing needed her. Yeah right, she thought. As if Hing is going to need a night off. Understudy just means, "You're not the lead."
She took another deep breath and fixed her long, wavy red hair. She had to step out of that change room looking "together." After all, everyone knew she wanted the part. She had burst into song twice in the cafeteria last term. She recited lines from the show during Drama class. She'd even practised every song with her vocal coach. She knew them backwards and forwards. Autumn had her heart set on the lead part in the musical. Everyone knew it.
Autumn tried to pull herself together. Suddenly, Angela and Carly burst into the change room.
"Oh, come here!" Angela said, holding out her arms for a hug.
Autumn forced a smile. "I'm okay, you guys. Really."
"You liar!" Angela grabbed Autumn for a hug and patted her on the back. "You've been looking forward to this all year."
Autumn almost started to cry, but she managed to stop herself. She stepped back and smiled. "I know, but I still got a good part. It's the second lead-I'm the funny one. I have a song, at least. And Hing is actually really good. Besides, she's in grade eleven. Of course she would get the lead."
"Well, she's not you," Angela said. "And she's not really that good, either."
"How do you know?" Autumn asked, giggling a bit. "You weren't at the auditions." She knew her best friend was just trying to make her feel better. Still, it felt good to have Angela on her side.
"Well...okay, but no one could be as good as you. Besides, she's not very nice, so how could she be that good?" Angela insisted.
"Okay, let's not talk about Hing," Carly said. "Hing does enough damage talking about other people on ChatBrat. Don't even get me started. Besides, this is more important-we brought supplies." She held out her hands and smiled. She had three Teen Fashionista magazines and a tiara. "I say we divvy these magazines up, kick back, and chill out. And the tiara is for you. You're a star no matter what part you got."
Autumn just had to laugh. She had the best friends in the world. She relaxed a bit as they sat on the change room bench. They each flipped through the pages of their favourite magazine. And wearing a tiara made it feel even better.
