Reluctant readers

At Tea Leaf Press, we believe that children learn at their own pace. Reading is no exception. Some children are avid readers who need no encouragement to pick up a book. Other children are less interested in reading. Perhaps they have difficulty reading, even a learning or comprehension disability. Perhaps they simply have talents and interests that lie in other areas.

We believe that reluctant readers and students who are reading "below their grade level" should not be penalized or stigmatized for being different. Rather, as parents and educators, we should strive to provide them with reading material that is of interest to them. If we can "hook" students on reading by providing material that they enjoy, then they will be motivated to read more challenging material on their own.

Reading is an important life skill, and we want to do everything we can to foster it. Tea Leaf Press books are designed specifically with reluctant readers in mind. Shorter sentences and simplified grammar will help students move through the text with ease. Our shorter chapters and book lengths will boost students' confidence in their ability to read.

Most importantly, our books do not look like lower-level books. No student wants to advertise that he or she is reading at a lower grade level by carrying around a book with large type and pictures. Tea Leaf Books look like regular books and deal with subject matter that is interesting and age-appropriate. In fact, students reading at all levels are enjoying our books!
